Neurofeedback Brain Training
Brain training for Veterans, close to home.
Neurofeedback is non-invasive, medication-free brain training. If you are enrolled in VA health care, you may be able to receive it at our office in Simpsonville, SC through the VA Community Care Network. This page shows you exactly how to ask your VA care team.
What it is
In-office neurofeedback with BrainPaint
Neurofeedback (also called EEG biofeedback) is a non-invasive way to train self-regulation of brain activity. Small sensors read your brainwaves, and software gives you real-time feedback so your brain can practice steadier patterns over repeated sessions. In our office, sessions are done using the BrainPaint system.
It has been studied as support for concerns many Veterans live with day to day — focus, sleep, stress, and emotional regulation. It is not a medication and not a cure, and results vary from person to person.
This page is about our in-office neurofeedback service. Whether the VA covers it depends on your eligibility and the VA’s authorization — see the steps below.
Step by step
How to request neurofeedback through VA Community Care
-
1
Make sure you’re enrolled in VA health care
Community Care is for Veterans who are enrolled in VA health care or otherwise eligible for VA care. If you’re not enrolled yet, you can apply at VA.gov or by calling the VA.
-
2
Tell your VA care team you want neurofeedback
At your next visit (or by message through your VA patient portal), let your VA primary care or mental health provider know you’re interested in neurofeedback and would like to receive it through the Community Care program.
-
3
Ask for a consult (referral) to BrainFit Studio
Ask your VA provider to put in a consult — this is the referral — for neurofeedback through the Veterans Community Care Program, and to list BrainFit Studio / Dr. Matthew McKeithan as your preferred in-network community provider. Give them the provider details and NPI number below so the referral reaches the right place.
-
4
The VA reviews and authorizes the referral
VA Community Care staff review the consult and confirm your eligibility, which depends on your needs and circumstances (for example, VA wait-time or drive-time standards). The VA must approve the referral before you begin care — otherwise you could be billed.
-
5
Schedule your first session
Once the VA authorizes the referral, you, a VA staff member, or the network administrator can schedule your first appointment with us. Sessions are completed in our office using BrainPaint.

Good to know
A few important things
- The referral has to come from the VA. Please don’t contact us to start the referral — your VA provider creates it. You’re welcome to give them our information and NPI.
- The VA decides eligibility and authorization, not us. We can’t guarantee that a referral will be approved.
- Wait for authorization before your first visit. Starting care before the VA approves the referral may mean you’re billed for it.
- Questions about coverage are best answered by your VA care team or the Community Care office at your VA facility.
